5000-300背景亮度传感器是在RVR评估系统中同大气透射仪或前向散射仪一同使用的一款基本的传感器。
光电子装配件被安装在一防恶劣天气传感器外壳中，外壳上带有一个前端窗口和一个不可缺少的罩。传感器是一个高稳定性硅光电二极管，同亮度级的7个数量级成线性反应, 传感器特性由一个适光校正滤波器补偿，以确保读数在3％范围内符合CIE白昼视觉响应，集中于555海里。
光电子装配件是温控的，有一对数特性以确保当同一标准模数转换器使用时在整个传感器的范围内读数。
